Indian Field

Indian Field, located at East 233rd Street and Van Cortlandt Park East, is currently a recreation area that features tennis courts, ballfields, and bocci courts. At one time, however, it was a principal planting field tended by local Native Americans. In August 1778, British troops ambushed a band of Stockbridge Indians who were scouting for the Continental Army just- north of Indian Field along present-day Van Cortlandt Park East. At East 238th Street, a cairn of stones with an accompanying plaque commemorates the slain Stockbridge Indians and their leader Abraham Nimham. It was dedicated in 1906 by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
