Salt Marsh
Salt marsh habitat makes up a great deal of Pelham Bay Park's natural areas, nearly 195 acres, making it the largest grouping outside of Jamaica Bay. Bodies of water shape the park's 13 miles of coast -- Long Island Sound and Eastchester Bay on its east border and the Hutchinson River on its west.
The Lagoon, a remnant of the original Pelham Bay, and Turtle Cove, an inlet to the south, provide excellent shelter and feeding grounds for the park's avian friends. In addition, the park's wetlands serve innumerable and invaluable functions, including filtering pollutants, reducing erosion, and mitigating floodwaters.
