TREE RESCUE

In July 2000 the New York Tree Trust launched the Tree Rescue program to save trees that are threatened by constricting tree guards, grates, and sidewalks. Rescue activities include widening small tree pits, removing unsightly debris, and adding soil and mulch. These seemingly small threats, such as lights wrapped tightly around branches or sidewalks paved to within inches of a tree trunk, can cause irreparable damage if not corrected. By the end of 2001, the Tree Trust rescued 275 trees, including the removal of 193 tree guards and grates, and the expansion of 68 tree pits.
