Forestry, Horticulture, and Maintenance and Operations/Hands-on work in New York City's parks

INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

FORESTRY

1. Interns will be responsible for handling and tracking information and work orders from the general public.  Work can include assisting with tree inspections, soil testing, reading site plans, identifying tree defects, and insect inspections.  Interns will also learn about tree selection such as street trees vs. ornamental trees.

2.  Interns will also be responsible for identifying tree hazards such as broken limbs.  Interns will be exposed to all aspects of tree removal contracts and identifying common tree diseases that affect our city trees such as the Asian Long Horn Beetle and Dutch Pine diseases.  The intern will also help in administrative work by inputting tree condition and inspection data, following up on constituent requests, and drafting responses to correspondence.

3.  Interns will shadow our Foresters to gain a general knowledge of parkland maintenance and the overall nature of City trees.  They would attend meetings with other city agencies to discuss how construction in other areas will affect tree health and other forestry related issues.

HORTICULTURE

1. Planting and maintaining Greenstreets and Garden areas throughout the Borough.  This would include planting annuals & shrubs, bulbs, pruning, mulching, weeding, fertilizing, and maintenance of pest control.  Interns will also be exposed to basic landscape maintenance.

2. Design, install and maintain garden and flowerbeds throughout the Borough’s parks and playgrounds.  Intern will work with landscape architects and horticulturists on selecting species and designing sites.   In addition, the intern will learn to use various manual and power tools and equipment including pruners, polesaws, rototillers, hedge trimmers, and weedwackers.

3. Administrative and research work including tracking of green spaces and gardens. The intern will also help oversee the maintenance of a database with more than 2,500 sites and promote the Greenstreets program through community outreach.  Interns will be working on our HIP (Horitculture Inspection Program) which evaluates gardens for conditions, visibility, mulch and other rating factors.

The intern will aid the Park & Recreation Manager in several aspects of park management including: playground inspections, data recording and analysis, staff scheduling, acting as team leader for volunteer groups, and writing reports for the Commissioner and other agency officials. 

MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS

1. The intern will aid the Park & Recreation Manager in several aspects of park management including: playground inspections, data recording and analysis, staff scheduling, acting as team leader for volunteer groups, and writing reports for the Commissioner and other agency officials. 

2.  The intern will also work directly with Park & Recreation Manager in landscape management and special event operations.  With landscape management the intern will be exposed to tree inventories, light tree pruning, and overall maintenance of green spaces.  With special event operations, the intern will help plan and coordinate events with our Special Events and Permits Department.  In addition, the intern will shadow the Park Manager and gain an inside knowledge to Park and staff management strategies.

3. The intern will also be exposed to our Parks Inspection Program (PIP).  PIP evaluates our parks’ conditions based on cleanliness, structural and landscape features.  Each intern will be responsible for helping to achieve the highest rating possible.  The intern will also assist and coordinate the Parks Greeter Program, which educates the public on parklands and programs and also initiates evaluations to the Public to get feedback on park use.

 

QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIAL SKILLS/AREAS OF STUDY

Candidates must be interested in working outdoors and have the ability to communicate well and work with the public.

This is an unpaid internship.
