Environmental Internships
Natural Resources
Group (NRG)
Natural Resources Group (NRG) develops resource management
and restoration policy for more than 9,000 acres of
parkland, including the city's wetlands, woodlands,
and meadows. Serving as an ecological watchdog, NRG
protects these natural resources and fosters native
regeneration. It also records the history of the city's
natural resources and analyzes vegetation and wildlife
habitats, soils and hydrology. NRG utilizes state-of-the-art
Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) in the process of monitoring and mapping
the city's natural resources. As an intern, you will
assist the Chief and his deputies in all aspects of
their work, including research, program design, and
fieldwork. You may also work with Parks staff and
community organizations to develop environmental education
brochures and programs. A science or research background
and grant writing or fieldwork experience are a plus.
Forestry
The Forestry division protects
New York City's 2.5 million trees. As an intern, you
will help promote and implement new programs and strategies
for urban forest health. You will help design procedures
for collecting baseline data on urban forest composition
and structure, as well as research plans and programs
regarding professional forestry policies, practices
and procedures. You will also aid in the implementation
of a central Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
program and write and administer private grants for
tree-related programs.
Greenstreets
Launched by the Parks Commissioner,
Greenstreets is a citywide project to convert paved
traffic areas, barren street triangles, medians and
malls into green spaces. As an intern, you will help
identify potential Greenstreets sites, coordinate
site selection and maintenance with officials from
other city agencies, and work with landscape architects
and horticulturists on selecting species and designing
sites. You will also help oversee the maintenance
of a database with more than 2,500 sites and promote
the Greenstreets program through community outreach.
Landscape or horticulture experience and some knowledge
of computers is preferable.
