Census Coordinator Assistant - Summer Internship
Central Forestry & Horticulture is responsible for citywide urban forestry initiatives including: street tree planting and landscape enhancement contracts, the Tree Trust, and the horticulture programs. The division plants over 10,000 trees and enhances the landscapes in and around 40 parks and playgrounds yearly. It also sets citywide forestry policies and practicies working closely with the borough forestry offices and pilots innovative new urban forest techologies. The division will head up the next citywide street tree census, which will be conducted in the summer of 2005.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Work closely with the Census Coordinator and designated staff on the execution of census project. Assist with the coordination of volunteer and in-house staff deployment, scheduling, data collection and management, meetings with other Parks divisions and volunteer groups, and equipment purchasing.
Assist with the tracking of data collection effort and compile progress reports.
Assist Parks staff involved in volunteer recruitment, training, marketing, press, and technology matters relating to the census.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Minimum sophomore standing in college with interest in urban forestry or a related subject such as environmental studies, horticulture or urban studies.
PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
1. Excellent communication and people skills. Experience working with the public.
2. Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
3. Valid New York State Driver's License required.
4. Ability to work independently.
