Capital Division Internships
The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation ("Parks") is one of the most vital and interesting City agencies, protecting New York City's 26,000 acres of green space, including 862 playgrounds, 15 miles of beaches, 7,000 acres of natural areas, 1,500 monuments and fountains, hundreds of tennis courts, 13 golf courses, 3 model airplane fields and millions of trees.
The Capital Projects division, created in 1934 by Robert Moses, the city's first Parks Commissioner, is charged with redesigning and rebuilding more than 1,500 sites under the jurisdiction of Parks. In addition to parks and playgrounds, the sites include bike paths, sea walls, outdoor and indoor pools, boardwalks, basketball courts, roller hockey rinks, baseball fields, historic houses, stadiums, recreation centers, monuments, and natural areas.
Parks' Capital Projects Division is composed of over 300 staff members including designers, landscape architects, architects, and construction resident engineers divided into Borough Teams. Together with procurement, management, and support staff, the teams average over 300 active design and construction projects a year. Recent projects include a $20 million effort to revitalize and create new green spaces in Lower Manhattan, improvements to waterfront parks such as Brooklyn Bridge Park, and restoration of historic structures like the Washington Square Arch.
This fiscal year, Parks anticipates completing design and construction for approximately $400 million worth of capital projects, ranging in size from small neighborhood playgrounds to new synthetic turf ballfields to shoreline infrastructure rehabilitation. We are also currently working on 65 projects, valued over $200 million, to refurbish parks throughout The Bronx over the next five years as a result of the City’s investment in the Croton Water Filtration Plant.
Parks is now seeking interns to work in our Capital Division in the following areas:
Engineering
Engineering interns will assist in the preparation of drawings and designs for capital projects, including swimming pools, playgrounds, ice skating rinks, refrigeration systems, air conditioners, and various electrical systems. Mechanical, electrical and civil engineering students are encouraged to apply.
Architecture
Architecture interns will assist licensed architects in the production of designs from scope preparation to final documents, including specifications and cost estimates. They will also have the opportunity to accompany architects on various site visits and city agency and community meetings.
Landscape Architecture
Landscape Architecture interns will assist landscape architects in design work, including drafting, lettering, and filing. They will also help write specifications, assist in preparation of cost estimates and calculations, and accompany landscape architects on site visits to check field conditions.
Construction
Construction interns will assist resident engineers and work outdoors in parks throughout the city. They will help oversee the construction of Parks projects, ranging in scope from small playgrounds to large recreation facilities, assist in the monitoring, supervision, and evaluation of contractors' performance, and help to resolve problems caused by unforeseen conflicts and conditions encountered in the field.
